Professional Development Session | Valuations for Financial Reporting
Presentation Summary
This CE session will discuss valuation concepts and methodologies, with emphasis on applications in financial reporting (focus on US GAAP).
Learning Objectives
By the end of this presentation, attendees will be able to:
1. Distinguish between fair value and fair market value.
2. Identify the three primary valuation approaches — recognize when the income, market, or cost approach is most appropriate, and understand the key inputs, assumptions, and limitations of each.
3. Navigate common financial reporting applications — develop familiarity with how valuation is used in ASC 805 purchase price allocations, ASC 350 goodwill impairment testing, ASC 718 stock compensation valuations, and fair value measurements under ASC 820.
4. Recognize the role of intangible assets in financial reporting — understand how intangible assets are identified, categorized, and valued, and how their treatment affects reported financials post-acquisition.
5. Apply judgment in selecting and defending valuation methods — appreciate the professional judgment involved in methodology selection and understand how auditors and regulators scrutinize valuation conclusions.
